Our teaching at the right level training took place successfully from the 8th to the 19th of February 2025.
The Teaching at the Right level methodology is an activity-based methodology developed by Pratham India and readapted by TaRL Africa to suite the African continent, aimed at helping children master literacy and numeracy skills after 120 hours of implementation of literacy and 120 hours of implementation of numeracy.
In Cameroon many children complete primary school when they cannot read or write because classrooms are sometimes too large to pay attention to the needs of all the children at once. After successful implementation in other African countries by other organizations and a limited practice in one school in Cameroon with excellent results by KING ED, we decided to take the methodology to Bamenda North west region of Cameroon where schools shut down because of the anglophone conflict and after the resumed children were placed in classes according to their ages and not according to what they know.
The training that was funded by D-Prize and Facilitated by Teaching at the Right Level Africa saw the participation of 19 classroom teachers, seven head teachers, two basic education administrators of the regional delegation of basic education and seven members of the KING ED team.
The training was organized in collaboration with the regional delegation of basic education who offered support and organization training.
Sessions were facilitated by Suleiman Mohammed and Janaidu Garba Alumnis from TaRL Africa in Nairobi Kenya.
Participants were drilled in assessment in the TaRL methodology, Literacy and Numeracy activities, session planning and monitoring and evaluation.
At the end of the exercise, participants were surprised to know there was a methodology like TARL that could have served learners. Participants shared their experience with teachers of other schools and our office has been flooded since then with teachers who want another training so they can take to their school,
With the right funding we intend to train 375 teachers against the next academic year. The need for the methodology in the conflict region of the north west cannot be overstated.
